Astrology is mocked as myth and astrologers as conmen who prey on the fears of susceptible humans. Yet, when disaster strikes, many seek ways to propitiate the stars and the planets, and find an expert astrologer who can suggest the proper methods (vidhis) that will bring succor. It’s trendy to insult those who don saffron and give spiritual instruction. But to the millions who throng the ashrams of gurus like Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi), Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev and Maharajji Neem Karoli Baba, they represent grace and liberation as well as the promise of protection. The irony is that charlatans abound in all sciences. Whether it is the village abortionist or the back lane quack, medical science has its deviants. Billions of dollars go into scientific research to fund projects that only keep upturning the findings of the previous ones. Science is about faith in reason, while faith is about the miraculous science that keeps the universe going, its planets whirling in their lonely ellipses, and its stars burning, as it looks down on the follies of the human race.

My Kuladeiva is Thirumala Sri Venkateshwara.

The history of the temple goes thus:
Once, Saint Brihu came to Vaikunta when Lord Vishnu was in Sesha sayana. Goddess Lakshmi was sitting by his side. Enraged that Lord Vishnu did not get up as a mark of respect on his arrival, he kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest. But instead of retaliating, Lord Vishnu got up and massaged Saint Brihu’s leg to ease the pain that would have been caused on having kicked him. Seeing this, Goddess Lakshmi was infuriated because, Lord Vishnu was indifferent to the disrespect that had been caused to her (Goddess Lakshmi resides in Lord Vishnu’s chest. By kicking Lord Vishnu’s chest ...

Perumal Temple at Parameswaramangalam - Parihara Sthalam for Vaastu Problems
Renovation started at the dilapidated Perumal temple at Parameswaramangalam, 20 km from Mahabalipuram, Chennai. Known as pariharastalam for vaastu-related troubles, the 1,500-year old temple has not seen consecration for a long time.
Excavation brought to surface an idol of Anjaneya, which has been installed in front of the main deity, where generally Garuda stands. Sowmya Damodara Perumal, the presiding deity holds Sudarsana in a ...

A lunar eclipse is a celestial phenomenon which occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon position themselves in a straight line and the shadow of the earth falls on moon. A lunar eclipse occurs in phases and may last anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours. An observer sees the moon slowly disappearing from one side as it enters the dark inner region of the earth’s shadow (umbra).
The moon fades away from view as it enters the umbra completely. A little while later, the moon is seen again with a reddish-coppery hue that goes away as the eclipse ends. Such a lunar eclipse is known as a total lunar eclipse. Since ages people have been giving prime importance to lunar eclipse occurrences.
The most recent total lunar eclipse occurred on 15th June, 2011. It was a central eclipse visible over many parts of Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia....

Prayag or Triveni Sangamam
Prayag, or Triveni Sangamam is considered the most sacred among the confluence of Indian rivers. This is the point where Ganga on one side, meets Yamuna from the other, and Saraswathi joins them, from beneath the ground. During summers, the water recedes from the shores. We take a boat from the shore and sail for about 2 kms, to reach an island like structure..
The Triveni Sangamam is along the sides of this island. Before making a trip to Kasi, people generally go to Rameshwaram, and bring some sand from there. This is symbolic of bringing Lord Veni Madhava. People come to ...

The footprint of Lord Vishnu at Gaya
Gaya is a holy place that came into existence when Lord Vishnu placed his foot on the demon Gayasur and killed him. Hence, anybody who steps into Gaya is absolved for his sins. The most important destination in Gaya for Hindus is the Vishnu Padha temple.
People come here for a ritual called ‘pinda daanam’. Here, history tells us why people in old days had many child...
