Kanyakumari, located at the southernmost tip of India, is one of our most sacred sites. Hallowed by its association with Indian classics like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and also mentioned in the ancient Tamil epics Manimekalai and Puranaanooru, people’s reverence for Kanyakumari increased further with the stay here of the great spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda. Millions visit Kanyakumari every year to receive the blessings of the Divine Mother who is worshipped here in the form of a youthful girl engaged in eternal penance for her Lord Shiva. The goddess is said to have killed a demon called Baanaasura who oppressed the world with his tyranny. On Vijaya Dasami, an image of the deity is taken in a colourful procession on a horse mount to a nearby village Mahadanapuram where the killing of Baanaasura is enacted with pomp. Offer worship at this ancient shrine of the Divine Mother and receive her divine grace in abundance.
