Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam is the foremost among the 108 Divya Desams, or sacred abodes of Lord Vishnu which every Vaishnava is expected to.A Chola king discovered the murti and constructed a grand temple here which is today the biggest temple complex in India covering an area of 156 acres with a perimeter of 1,116m! This temple acquires greater significance from the fact that it is the only Vishnu temple where all the Alwars (saints of Tamil Bhakthi movement) have sung in praise of the Lord. The temple is equally revered by followers of all schools of thought - Advaita, Vishistadvaita and Dvaita. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped here as Ranganayaki. There are also numerous auxiliary shrines in the temple with beautiful images of gods and goddesses in various forms of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu - Rama, Narasimha, Dhanvantari etc. Another unique feature of this temple is that the 800 yr old physical body of Sri Ramanujacharya is preserved in the temple by regular application of specially made herbal paste called thirumanjanam. The temple chariot procession held during the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is a feast for the eyes.
