Madurai is synonymous with the celebrated Meenakshi Temple which was recently listed in the New Seven Wonders of the World international poll. The Pandyan King Kulasekara built this magnificent temple and created a lotus shaped city around it. On the day the city was to be named, as Lord shiva blessed the land and its people, divine nectar (Madhu) was showered on the city from his matted locks. This city was henceforth known as Madhurapuri. The Madurai temple is one of the biggest temples in south India. Devi Parvati is worshipped here as Meenakshi and Lord Shiva as Sundareswara. The wedding of Meenakshi-Sundareswara is beautifully depicted in stone sculpture. Newly married couples and those who are in search of a life partner seek the blessings of Meenakshi Sundareswara for a fulfilling marital life. There are numerous shrines to other important deities within the temple precincts like the famous Mukkuruni Vinayagar, Visalakshi- Viswanatha, Durga, Lashmi, Saraswati etc. Offer pooja to Mother Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswara and receive their divine grace in abundance.
