Nellaiappar Temple, Tirunelveli
Lord Shiva is worshipped as Nellaiappar and Devi Parvati as Kanthimathi Amman. Sage Agastya is said to have worshipped Lord Siva in this temple. Shiva is also called as Venunathar, Veithanathar, Nelvelinathar and Salivanathar here. Devi Parvati is also called by the names Vadivudaiamman and Thirukamakottamudaiya Nachiar. Lord Vinayaga is called Polla Pillaiyar and Lord Muruga, Arumuga Peruman. The famous Saiva saint Tirugnana Sambandar is said to have sung about this temple, thus it is one of the important Padalpetrasthalams (meaning ‘the temples where the saints have sung praises for the Lord’) of Saiva tradition. The 2,000-year-old temple has 32 theerthams. The speciality of this temple is that there are a lot of stories about it.
